 | Living & Lifestyle28.06.2008 - The Canary Islands health service recently inaugurated this year´s prevention plan against the adverse effects of unusually high temperatures.
The service includes a warning system for unusually hot weather and a plan of action for dealing with the many casualties that heatwaves in the islands always claim. It is a joint initiative between the Meteorological Agency, the health service and the emergency services. It is designed to take into account the needs of those who are particularly vulnerable to excessive heat, such as the elderly, young children and the chronically ill.

 | Living & LifestyleLas Palmas - 18.06.2008 - At a recent conference to mark International Celiac Day the Las Palmas Parents of Celiacs Association (Asocepa) called for better facilities for the detection of the disease in adults.
The president of Asocepa, Carlos Castellano, informed listeners that there are presently 1,500 people known to be suffering from celiac disease around the Islands. However, on a worldwide scale it is thought that for every case identified there may be ten more that go undetected. This could mean there are actually 15,000 cases throughout the archipelago. more... |

Each year classes full of secondary school pupils make a pledge to not smoke for a period of at least five months. Students take part in various activities that illustrate the dangers of smoking and that instill the confidence to say no. According to the National Health Questionnaire 11.24 per cent of the archipelago’s children under the age of 15 spend three or more hours a day glued to their electronic friends. Most of the doctors questioned, 91 per cent in total, stated that tobacco use is the most life-threatening condition amongst their patients.
