Small earthquake hits Tenerife
Parts of Tenerife have suffered what the authorities have described as a 'moderate' earthquake, whose epicentre has been traced to a spot just 10km off the east coast.

Tenerife - 05.02.2010 - The momentary 'quake, which was felt strongly in several areas in the north and east of the island, occurred at 3.10pm and has been measured at 4.0 on the Richter scale by the Canarian Geophysics Institute. No structural damage is thought to have been caused but switchboards of the emergency services have been inundated with calls from concerned members of the public. Some residents of blocks of flats in Las Chumberas, near Alcampo in La Laguna, fled from their homes fearing a building collapse. Karl McLaughlin, who was working at his desk a short distance away, said 'the floor shook and bookcases rattled for a second or two and we ran out to see if something had collided with the building'. The Institute revealed that three other small earthquakes have been recorded in less than a week on Tenerife, all of them below 2.5 on the Richter scale.
